June 20 is World Refugee Day, an opportunity to draw attention to those who have been displaced around the globe. This is a collection of photos documenting a small percentage of the people who have been driven from their home. --Leanne Burden Seidel

Alain Diabanza, 35, teaches French to a student in Malaga, Spain on May 29. Diabanza was born in the Democratic Republic of Congo, which was ravaged by a brutal conflict from 1998-2003. He went to Angola, Senegal and then Morocco from where he swam to the Spanish enclave of Ceuta. Al Hassan said that after the start of the Syrian uprising he felt the situation became too dangerous for his family, and he decided to flee.
